What this settlement is about

In Ahmed v. Liberty Mutual Group, plan participants alleged the insurer breached its ERISA duties by letting its 401(k) plan pay excessive recordkeeping fees and keep underperforming investment options. Liberty Mutual agreed to a $13.4 million settlement covering participants from April 2014 through the end of 2025. Anyone still holding a plan balance gets their share deposited automatically, while former participants must file a claim form by August 22, 2026. Because the class was certified on a mandatory basis, members cannot opt out; the final approval hearing is set for September 2, 2026.

Who is eligible

All participants and beneficiaries of the Liberty Mutual 401(k) Plan at any point from April 10, 2014 through December 31, 2025, other than the defendants themselves. Current participants are paid into their plan accounts automatically; former participants must submit a claim form.

Estimated payout

Individual shares set by a court-approved allocation plan based on account balances; amounts vary.

No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.

Proof requirements

Partial proof: the base payment does not require documents, but higher payment tiers (such as documented-loss reimbursement) do. You can usually file the simple tier with just the claim form, or attach records to claim more.
