Canadian Armed Forces Racial Discrimination and Harassment Class Action Settlement

The Federal Court approved a $150 million settlement on January 10, 2025 to resolve class claims that racialized members of the Canadian Armed Forces faced systemic racial discrimination and harassment over four decades of service. The one-year claims window opened October 15, 2025 and closes October 15, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Deloitte LLP is the court-appointed claims administrator and assesses each claim against the settlement's compensation levels. Beyond individual payments, the deal commits the CAF to organizational reforms and offers claimants restorative engagement sessions.

Current and former Canadian Armed Forces members who experienced racial discrimination or racial harassment connected to their military service at any point between April 17, 1985 and January 10, 2025. Estates of deceased members may also be able to claim in some circumstances.

A $5,000 common experience payment, plus $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000 more based on an assessment of the claimant's narrative evidence, for a total of $5,000 to $35,000. Non-monetary options include restorative engagement and apology letters..

No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.
