What this settlement is about
This settlement compensates Indigenous people who, under the federal Indian Boarding Homes Program, were taken from their communities and placed with private families to attend school, where many experienced cultural isolation and abuse. Claims opened on the August 21, 2024 implementation date and run until February 22, 2027. Every approved claimant receives a base $10,000 payment, and those who suffered abuse can pursue individually assessed Category 2 compensation up to $200,000. Canada also funded a $50 million foundation dedicated to healing and cultural preservation, and the administrator offers eligibility checking, support lines and information sessions through the official site.
Who is eligible
First Nations, Métis and Inuit individuals whom Canada placed in private or boarding homes between roughly 1951 and 1992 so they could attend school away from their communities. Estates of class members who have passed away may also be eligible in certain cases.
Estimated payout
A $10,000 Category 1 payment for every eligible class member, with optional Category 2 claims for abuse suffered in the placements ranging from an additional $10,000 up to $200,000 depending on the harm assessed..
No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.
Proof requirements
Partial proof: the base payment does not require documents, but higher payment tiers (such as documented-loss reimbursement) do. You can usually file the simple tier with just the claim form, or attach records to claim more.
