What this settlement is about

This settlement between Hyundai, Kia, and a multistate coalition of attorneys general compensates drivers whose immobilizer-less vehicles were targeted in the wave of thefts popularized on social media. Reimbursement is available for qualifying thefts and theft attempts occurring on or after April 29, 2025, with documentation required. Because it is a limited fund paid out on a rolling basis, claims can stop being paid before the March 31, 2027 deadline if money runs out. Eligible owners can also get a free zinc-reinforced ignition cylinder protector installed at any authorized dealership.

Who is eligible

Owners and lessees of listed 2011-2022 Hyundai and Kia models that shipped without an engine immobilizer, whose vehicle was stolen or subjected to a theft attempt on or after April 29, 2025. The vehicle must have had the anti-theft software upgrade installed, or an upgrade appointment booked, when the theft or attempt happened.

Estimated payout

Up to $4,500 for a total-loss theft, up to $2,250 for a partial loss, or up to $375 in expenses from an attempted theft; free zinc-sleeve ignition protector installation is also available.

No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.

Proof requirements

This settlement requires documentation. Check the official claim form for exactly what is accepted before you start; receipts, account statements, repair invoices, or records from the defendant are typical.
