Hyundai/Kia Airbag Control Unit Settlement

Hyundai and Kia are providing $62.1 million in payments and credits to close out claims that a defective ZF-TRW airbag control unit could keep airbags and seatbelt pretensioners from firing in a crash. The class sweeps in both recalled vehicles and a longer list of unrecalled models. Drivers can recover documented expenses tied to the recall and may also receive a residual cash payment once expense claims are processed. The filing window stays open until April 8, 2027.

Owners and lessees (current or former) of specified Hyundai and Kia vehicles equipped with ZF-TRW airbag control units, covering recalled models such as the 2010-2013 Sonata and certain Forte, Optima, and Sedona years, plus unrecalled models including later Sonata, Kona, and Optima years.

Reimbursement of recall-related out-of-pocket costs (towing, rentals, repairs, lost wages, childcare), plus a residual distribution of up to $350 for recalled vehicles or $150 for unrecalled vehicles.

No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.
