What this settlement is about

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice approved an $11 million settlement resolving allegations that trailing commissions were paid out of CIBC and Renaissance mutual fund assets to discount brokers that provided no personalized advice, dragging down returns for unitholders. Investors who still hold the funds do not need to act, since their share of the net fund will be deposited directly into the funds. Former unitholders must submit a claim form through the settlement administrator by November 18, 2026 to receive compensation. This is one of a series of Canadian trailing-commission settlements; parallel cases against other fund managers have settled or are pending separately.

Who is eligible

Anyone who held units of a CIBC mutual fund trust or Renaissance mutual fund trust at any time on or before September 5, 2025, as long as the units were held somewhere other than a discount brokerage account. Only investors who no longer hold the funds need to file a claim.

Estimated payout

Reported by court notices and third-party sources, not yet confirmed on the official administrator site: A pro rata share of the net settlement fund based on holdings. Current unitholders receive their share automatically through deposits into the funds; former unitholders must file a claim with supporting account records by the deadline..

No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.

Proof requirements

Partial proof: the base payment does not require documents, but higher payment tiers (such as documented-loss reimbursement) do. You can usually file the simple tier with just the claim form, or attach records to claim more.
