What this settlement is about

Purchasers alleged that Pfizer sold Chantix while the drug contained nitrosamine impurities, a class of probable carcinogens that later triggered recalls of the medication. Pfizer agreed to a $44 million fund covering roughly six years of U.S. retail purchases. Individual buyers can recover up to the amount they spent, drawn from a consumer pool capped at a fifth of the fund, with insurers and other payors taking the balance. Supporting purchase records are encouraged but claims can be filed without them.

Who is eligible

Individuals and third-party payors anywhere in the U.S. or its territories who paid any amount at retail for the smoking-cessation drug Chantix between September 29, 2015 and September 17, 2021.

Estimated payout

Consumers split up to 20% of the available fund pro rata, capped at what each person actually paid for Chantix; the remainder goes to third-party payors.

No payment amount is ever guaranteed. Pro rata payouts shrink as more valid claims come in, and every payment waits on final court approval and any appeals.

Proof requirements

Partial proof: the base payment does not require documents, but higher payment tiers (such as documented-loss reimbursement) do. You can usually file the simple tier with just the claim form, or attach records to claim more.
